"Bathurst - A foretaste of heaven in twenty-eleven" - Music for Ascension & Pentecost
Summer School Repertoire
The music program for Summer School is still being finalised, however, we can start to share some of the scrumptious servings that you would expect at our foretaste of heaven in twenty-eleven feast.
The composers represent Australia, New Zealand, America and Europe. One of the Australian composers is Richard Connolly who, with James McAuley as his librettist, wrote many hymns. His particular claim to fame is the ABC TV Playschool theme There’s a Bear in There. We will sing at least three of his hymns through the week.
The bigger works include Edward Elgar’s anthem The Spirit of the Lord from “The Apostles”, his oratorio about the calling of the Apostles and their experiences of Jesus’ preaching, crucifixion, and ascension. This is listed to be presented at the closing Festival Service on Monday 10 January.
John Stainer’s settings of the Evensong canticles in B flat are likely to feature at the Friday evening service in All Saints’ Cathedral.
Many of the composers are still alive, so the period range of the music may be said to range from Tudor (Thomas Tallis) to Today; a menu covering 500 years of the church’s musical cuisine.
